The aim of this course is to consolidate your English language skills through the study of literature. The program will consist in the study of two American short stories :
The Night of the Iguana, by Tennessee Williams (1948)
Speech Sounds, by Octavia Butler (1984)
Please note that for The Night of the Iguana, we will be comparing the original short story, the play and the movie. In preparation for the start of the semester, you can watch the movie (DVD available at the university library) and/or the play (a version of the play is still available on YouTube, performed by the UCA). A copy of the short story will be provided on the first day of class.
For Speech Sounds, different versions of the audiobook are available on YouTube. A copy of the short story will be handed out on the first day of class.

Both texts will be accompanied by a worksheet with questions guiding your understanding of the stories and providing you with topics for an oral presentation and for the written assignment in class.

Your grade will be one oral presentation (50%) and the in-class written assignment (50%)
