In the second semester we will read a short novel, Mr. Sammler’s Planet, by the American author Saul Bellow. Please buy the novel (it is available in paperback and costs less than 10 euros) and begin reading it before the course begins. This is an English class and reading in English, in literary English, will be a major part of our work. But since a language also means listening, speaking and writing, you will be expected to be able to talk in detail about some aspect of the novel, to listen to others talk about it, and finally to write a short essay. Students will obtain two marks, one for a short oral presentation and one for a piece of written work at the end of the semester.
