Art and Nation-Building in the USA

Ce cours cherche à montrer comment les différentes formes d’art, tout particulièrement la peinture et l’architecture, ont servi à établir puis renforcer la cohésion politique de la jeune nation américaine. Après avoir défini quelques concepts-clés, le cours s’attardera tout particulièrement sur la peinture de paysage au 19^ème siècle, qui a consacré la majesté des paysages américains. Sur le plan architectural, le classicisme sera étudié, ainsi que les formes d’architecture plus spécifiquement américaines.

L’objectif sera de donner les moyens aux étudiant.e.s d’analyser une œuvre artistique ou un texte dans son contexte historique et culturel au prisme de la construction d’une identité nationale. Les TD développeront les capacités d’analyse et d’expression écrite des étudiants à travers un entrainement aux exercices de commentaire et de dissertation.

Session 1 :

Étudiants régime général + étudiants régime spécial : Examen terminal. Commentaire ou dissertation. 3 h.

Session 2 (« rattrapage ») :

Étudiants régime général et régime spécial : Examen oral (30 mn de préparation/ 15 mn de passage).
