Civilisation :

Ce cours cherche à montrer comment les différentes formes d’art, tout particulièrement la peinture et l’architecture, ont servi à établir puis renforcer la cohésion politique de la jeune nation américaine. Après avoir défini quelques concepts-clés, le cours s’attardera tout particulièrement sur la peinture de paysage au 19^ème siècle, qui a consacré la majesté des paysages américains. Sur le plan architectural, le classicisme sera étudié, ainsi que les formes d’architecture plus spécifiquement américaines.

L’objectif sera de donner les moyens aux étudiant.e.s d’analyser une œuvre artistique dans son contexte historique et culturel au prisme de la construction d’une identité nationale.

Littérature (Scarlet Letter):

• To present the broad historical context of 17th-century New England Puritanism that serves as the background of Hawthorne's fiction in The Scarlet Letter.
• To enable students to compare and contrast the historical reality and Hawthorne's literary reconstruction of Puritan society two centuries later.
• To strengthen the skills of close reading and narrative analysis.
• To improve oral and written English through class participation and regular composition exercises.

Session 1 :

• Étudiants régime spécial : Contrôle terminal écrit 3h commun avec ECUE 2.

Session 2 (« rattrapage ») :

Étudiants régime général et régime spécial : Examen oral de 15 mn (30 mn de préparation).
