Objectifs

This course investigates the different representations of North American Indians from Columbus to the present, comparing non-Indigenous representations with self-representations by Native peoples themselves. This multifaceted investigation will span a variety of eras and genres of representation from travel accounts, novels and other fiction, visual arts including painting and film, and other cultural manifestations of representation such as advertising and sports mascots.

Classes will involve text and image analysis, group work and personal research of documents presented in class. Written and oral skills will be equally called upon.
