Description

What do the Christmas tree, the hamburger, Shakespeare, operetta and treatises of education for girls
have in common? All those cultural objects have been transferred and adapted, travelling through the
anglophone, francophone, and germanophone spheres at some point in the 18th and 19th centuries.
This seminar offers an initiation to the analysis of such interculturality. We shall examine various
objects – books, music, discourses, practices, scientific disciplines... – travelling from one country to
another, in the course of which they take on new meaning and enrich the host country. There will be a
particular focus on the “classical” period of cultural transfer, ranging from c.1700 to 1939.
This seminar addresses students interested in literature, “civilisation” or history, and linguistics.
