Description

This workshop is a face-to-face training in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) meant to complement the online course previously designed by Emeritus Professor Jean-Rémi Lapaire: “English for academic research: codes and skills.” The aim is to develop a set of verbal and non-verbal skills necessary for PhD candidates to fare well in academia.

Using parts of the aforementioned online course as material for independent study on e-campus, 3 face-to-face meetings with instructor Marie-Lise Paoli will take place in order to help students navigate the Moodle by offering support and guided practice along the following lines:

  1. Introduction to the course objectives, methods and assignments: early session (October) to set the language training in motion (1hr)
  2.  Assessing the students’ progress in the main task: how to organize a postgraduate conference in English (April) (1hr)
  3. Practising Language Socialization: the closing session (May) will take the form of a social gathering with refreshments to practise the proper linguistic etiquette on site, in compliance with the norms of polite speech and communication prevailing in the academic milieu (1hr)

The essential communicative skills that students are invited to develop are conversational and writing skills (interacting in English with other researchers, giving a 3MT presentation, answering a CFP, presenting a paper, organizing a conference).
