Drones and 3D Photogrammetric Modeling and Research of Cultural Heritage, The Peruvian Case

The introduction of both drones and photogrammetric 3D modeling have signified an authentic revolution in Archaeology, with particular impact in site management, research and the protection of built cultural heritage. In this talk we will review some of the approaches that are being implemented in Peru, a country with an extraordinarily rich cultural heritage, in need of protection and research. Documentation of sites and archaeological contexts using low flying drones equipped with photographic cameras, multispectral cameras or LIDAR sensors have brought tremendous amounts of new data to be interpreted.

Professor Luis Jaime Castillo Butters is one of Peru's leading archaeologists. In recent years he has specialized in the study of historical and archaeological sites through low altitude drones photography and Photogrammetric 3D Modeling. His visit to UBM at Archéosciences Bordeaux laboratory, will give him the opportunity to present his new discoveries and share his experience with the Archeovision platform, which
specializes in the use of 3D tools.

Professor of Archaeology, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. BA and
Licenciatura in Archaeology at the PUCP. MA in Archaeology and PhD in
Anthropology at UCLA. Director of the San Jose de Moro Archaeological Program since 1991. Conducts research in the Jequetepeque Valley focused on the evolution of complex Pre-Columbian societies, ideology and power, the political and geopolitical organization of the Moche, the collapse of the Moche, ritual and funerary practices, drones in archaeology, 3D Photogrammetric Modeling.
Visiting Professor in the Universities of Lund, Harvard, Pablo de Olavide, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Université de Paris 3 and Université de Bordeaux 3, as well as Fellow at Harvard´s Dumbarton Oaks. Author and coauthor of numerous books and articles. He has also been Minister and Vice Minister of Culture in Peru where he had to deal, on a daily basis with the realities of Heritage Promotion and Preservation.
